Sheffield Wednesday have made an offer for Troyes striker Ike Ugbo as they try to bring him back to the club following a successful loan spell.
Sheffield Wednesday have made an offer for Troyes’ Ike Ugbo as they look to bring the striker back to Hillsborough after his successful loan in January.
That’s according to Telegraph reporter Mike McGrath, who revealed that the Owls have formalised their interest with a bid, although they are likely to face competition to land Ugbo, who is attracting some attention from Premier League clubs.
“Sheffield Wednesday have made an opening bid for Troyes forward Ike Ugbo, who was at Hillsborough last season on loan and scored 7 in 17 starts to help the club stay in Championship. Other second tier clubs are seriously interested and watched by Premier League clubs.”
It’s been a very busy summer already for Danny Rohl as he looks to reshape the squad ahead of his first full season in charge, and the recruitment team are looking across the globe at how they can improve the team.
However, Ugbo is someone that they already know, as he was signed in January and went on to play a big role for the Owls in their survival bid, as outlined above.
After scoring just four goals during the first half of the season whilst at Cardiff, the switch to Hillsborough really benefited the Canadian international.
Therefore, bringing him back to Yorkshire makes total sense for the Owls, and you would imagine that Ugbo enjoyed his time with Wednesday considering his career had been stalling in recent years.
Following on from that, Wednesday are right to be targeting a striker, and if they can’t convince Ugbo to return, it’s important they move onto other options.
It’s been a ridiculously busy few weeks already for Rohl, and the additions of Charlie McNeill, Jamal Lowe and Olaf Kobacki will provide Wednesday with much more threat in the final third. Plus, Josh Windass agreeing to a contract extension was a major boost.
However, even though those individuals will give the boss more quality and depth, they are still arguably lacking that player who could get them 15-20 goals.
Ugbo’s form if maintained over a full season suggests he could fall into that category, so he may be the missing piece of the jigsaw to spearhead this new-look Sheffield Wednesday attack.
The appeal of Wednesday is clear right now, as it feels like they are a big club back on the rise.
To his credit, Dejphon Chansiri appears to be doing everything a fan would want from him right now. He agreed a new deal for Rohl, and he has backed the German in the market, and whilst you can ask why he didn’t do this sooner, it’s certainly changed the mood right now.
In Rohl, Wednesday have a quality head coach, and he has a clear plan in place about how he wants the side to play, and they have gone about bringing in players to suit that style.
