Sheffield Wednesday players are considering refusing to train later this week as their wages were once again not paid on time.
Sheffield Wednesday’s squad will play their fixture against Birmingham City on Tuesday, although they are considering not training later in the week as they continue to wait for their September wages.
It’s no secret that the Owls have had huge financial issues over the past six months under Dejphon Chansiri, with the owner having failed to pay the wages on time on several occasions.
That has already brought sanctions from the EFL, and the fans are regularly protesting as they look to force change at the top of the club.
It was said last week that Chansiri was going to be late with the payments again this month, with the salaries due on Friday, although it was hoped the situation would be resolved by Monday.
However, in a fresh development, reporter Rob Dorsett revealed that no money arrived yesterday, which is understandably hugely frustrating and worrying for those involved.
And, the journalist added that the group are considering taking action, which could see certain players not turn up to training later this week in protest at the situation.
“Sheffield Wednesday players and staff went unpaid again this month. Payments were due on Friday, but they were told wages would be delayed until Monday - no payments arrived yesterday either. Players will play match vs Birmingham City tonight, but some are considering refusing to train later this week.”
This is unacceptable from Chansiri, and it’s clear that for Sheffield Wednesday to progress as a club, they need a full sale as quickly as possible.
Obviously, you have sympathy for the players and staff who are waiting on their wages, as it’s a worrying position for them to be in, and the fact it has happened several times now is not on.
So, it’s no surprise that they are considering taking action, and if players at a Championship club do refuse to train, it will send out a strong message.
Of course, it’s not ideal preparation for the Coventry game, but Henrik Pedersen and the supporters will understand why the players may feel it’s necessary, and there’s no doubt they will be backed.
Now, all attention is on a very tough game at Birmingham tonight, and the players should be praised for remaining professional when it comes to playing the games, as they have continued to give their all for the club - as evidenced by picking up four points from their past two league games.
So, they will hope to continue that form against Blues, and it will then be interesting to see how the rest of the week plays out, and we will hope payments reach the players as soon as possible.
