Duncan Watmore is currently available as a free agent after his departure from Millwall earlier this year
Sheffield Wednesday are hoping to complete a deal to bring Duncan Watmore to Hillsborough as a free agent.
According to Alan Nixon, the Owls are pushing to sign the 31-year-old following his exit from Millwall last summer.
Watmore made 26 appearances in the Championship last season, with the Lions coming eighth in the table.
He contributed five goals and one assist for the London outfit, but departed following the conclusion of his contract, which could open the door for a move to Sheffield Wednesday.
It has been reported that Sheffield Wednesday are keen for Watmore to train with Henrik Pedersen’s first team squad ahead of a proposed move.
Watmore is also understood to be ready to join the Championship side, as he seeks a return to regular game time.
However, any decision over a move to the Yorkshire outfit will have to depend on the EFL, with any incomings needing permission before being allowed due to financial restrictions placed on the club.
It has been a difficult year for Sheffield Wednesday, who have struggled behind the scenes with the payment of staff and players.
Only two signings were made during the summer transfer window, with Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass both joining on loan.
But free agents can still be registered outside of the market, meaning a deal for Watmore could go through if granted by the EFL.
It’s believed that a free agent move could prove more complicated for Sheffield Wednesday, as it will require a contract, unlike their agreements for Amass and Horvath.
Sheffield Wednesday are currently 23rd in the Championship table with just one point from their opening five fixtures, with their next league game coming against Portsmouth on 20 September in a 3pm kick-off at Fratton Park.
Watmore scored five goals from 26 appearances in the Championship last year, and has in the past shown he can chip in with goals at this level.
The forward has struggled to become a top player in the Championship, but he could do a great job for a side that will be fighting against relegation this year.
Given Sheffield Wednesday’s limited options, this could be the best bit of business they could manage at the moment, if they can get the deal over the line.
The 31-year-old has plenty of experience he can also bring to this otherwise quite young squad, which could prove quite useful for Pedersen’s side.
