It's no secret that Sheffield Wednesday's on-field woes will continue into the second half of the season, but there's a high likelihood that they may be entering the final few months of the campaign with fewer senior players than they already have.

With relegation to League One all but confirmed for the Owls, all eyes are on those who chose to remain at Hillsborough this summer, despite late wage payments and general uncertainty about the future of the club under previous owner, Dejphon Chansiri.

Sheffield Wednesday finished comfortably mid-table last season, indicating that the senior players at the club are more than good enough to play above the English third tier.

Club legend Barry Bannan has been the subject of interest from fellow Championship and some Scottish Premiership clubs, and Max Lowe is also a name in the rumour mill, too, after it was revealed that the centre-back was the subject of an enquiry from Rangers, currently managed by former Owls boss Danny Rohl.

The German, more than anyone, knows the extent of how bad things were at Hillsborough over the summer, with him going on record to reveal how poor the communication was from the former owner towards the tail end of his tenure there.

Therefore, some fans feel that it could be slightly distasteful for Rohl to swoop in and take Lowe north of the border ahead of what is sure to be an equally difficult latter half of the campaign for the Owls.

Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit reacts to Rangers, Max Lowe enquiry

Patrick McKenna, FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit, feels that "sentiment can't come in the way" of a good deal, and wouldn't bemoan Danny Rohl for improving his Rangers side with a centre-back he knows well.

Lowe's Wednesday contract is up this summer, and the club has no extension trigger on the deal, either. Therefore, a departure seems an inevitability, whether that be this month or in the summer.

"It's quite obvious that our remaining Championship quality players would be of interest to other clubs," McKenna said.

"The reality is, whether he goes in January or in the summer, Max Lowe isn't going to be playing for Sheffield Wednesday in League One.

"Danny Rohl's the Rangers manager, doing a good job at turning them around. In January, one of his focuses will be to improve the squad, and having known and managed Lowe, he knows that he'll do a job for them, and he's entitled to come in for any player at any club."

Indeed, this all stems back to the mismanagement of Sheffield Wednesday in the final months of Dejphon Chansiri's reign, and the club seems powerless to let go of the remaining second-tier standard players in the Wednesday squad.

McKenna has chosen to fixate on that, rather than believing Danny Rohl is taking advantage of the dire situation of his former side.

"The fact that we're in a situation where Lowe will be leaving, it's nothing to do with him or Rohl, it's about what Dejphon Chansiri did to this football club," the fan pundit continued.

"Danny Rohl is a professional football manager at another football club, and his focus is on what's best for them; you can't let sentiment come in the way.

"I wouldn't be gutted or surprised if he did leave, but it would be worrying if we did lose some of our best players before the end of the season, as it's going to make things even harder in an already tough year."

Sheffield Wednesday will have to prepare for a difficult end to the January transfer window

A lot of the focus towards the tail end of 2025 was on whether Sheffield Wednesday would be able to add to their depleted squad, and not many were questioning the possibility that Henrik Pedersen would lose some of his established first-team players.

There's no doubting that there'll be plenty of player turnover this summer as the Owls prepare for life back in League One, but some of those expected to leave in the summer may end up departing earlier than planned.

Luckily enough, Lowe, who is currently recovering from a calf injury, hasn't expressed a desire to leave the club as yet. Additionally, Bannan's status as a club legend may lead a lot of Wednesday fans to believe that he will stick it out for the rest of the season, but with just over a week remaining in the January window, anything can change.

The Owls are currently 35 points adrift from safety, but even without their 18-point deduction, they've only accumulated 11 points in the first 26 games of the campaign. If even more established first-teamers depart this month, then it would be hard to envisage them picking up many more between now and the end of the season.

Therefore, keeping the likes of Lowe and Bannan past February 2nd's deadline will be paramount, even if it prolongs the inevitable departure in the summer.
