There is some concern that Yan Valery could still leave the Owls amid his strong start to the season.

Sheffield Wednesday supporters hoped that relegation, coupled with new ownership, would breed a brighter future, and that already seems to be the case this season.

The Owls are flying high in League One, perched at the top of the table with 12 points from their opening five games, with Saturday's 2-1 victory over Peterborough United their latest statement victory.

Yan Valery bagged the winning goal at the Weston Homes Stadium, his first of the campaign, in what has been an impressive start to the season for the Tunisia international.

Many expected the right-back to depart Hillsborough this summer, and although he has remained in South Yorkshire, there is every chance he could still leave the club.

Having spent the end of last season on loan with Swiss side Young Boys, many assumed that Valery would leave Hillsborough in tandem with Sheffield Wednesday's relegation.

The 27-year-old had been linked with a move away from the club over the summer, with Wrexham and Rangers among those reportedly interested, but he has remained and since shone.

When asked whether he was surprised that Valery remains an Owls player and whether he could still leave with overseas windows open, FLW's Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna shared his view.

"I certainly am surprised that Yan Valery has remained at Hillsborough, when I was convinced that he would leave at some stage during the summer," Patrick told Football League World.

"But the fact that, for now, he seems to have committed his future to us is fantastic. Of course, he could still go in the overseas transfer window, so it is certainly still one to watch in my view.

"Let's see how it goes, but certainly we're in a stronger position with Yan Valery than I thought we would be at this stage of the season, so let's take that as a positive and see where it goes from here."

Although the English and major European transfer windows are now closed, there are still plenty open around the world, with one standing out in particular for Valery.

The Brazilian, Mexican, Portuguese and Saudi windows are still open, while the Swiss window remains active until Tuesday, September 8.

As previously mentioned, the defender spent the end of last season on loan with Young Boys, where he made 14 appearances, contributing three assists and was a regular starter.

There has been no suggestion that the Swiss club will move again for the right-back before the deadline, and Henrik Pedersen has outlined his desire to keep him at Hillsborough.

However, as we saw on deadline day, things can change very quickly, so there may understandably be some concern that he could yet leave.

The start of this season has been superb for Valery, and he has shown why he is such an asset to this thriving Sheffield Wednesday side.

Valery has started every single League One game for the Owls and has produced a string of strong performances since the defeat to Bradford City in late August.

No right-back in the division has completed more dribbles than the Tunisian's eight, while he also ranks in the top four per cent of players in his position for recoveries, according to Fotmob.

Wednesday have demonstrated their sizeable attacking threat with 13 goals scored already this season, and judging from Valery's performances, he will likely continue to produce at the business end of the pitch as well as the back.

While there is some concern he could still leave, the right-back looks more likely to stay and what a contribution he is set to make this season.
