After a turbulent period, Sheffield Wednesday can look to a brighter future following Arise Capital Partners completing their takeover of the club.

There was more good news after the change in ownership was confirmed, as the Owls will not start next season with a points deduction.

Nevertheless, there’s still plenty of work for the hierarchy to do, as they are inheriting a weak squad that is low on numbers, so many new signings are on the horizon.

Sheffield Wednesday told of difficulties they will face to sign Jamie Vardy

As you would expect, a host of players have been linked with the Owls since the season finished, and there’s no denying that Jamie Vardy has been the biggest name.

The Leicester legend, who is a boyhood Wednesday fan, has spent this season with Cremonese in Serie A, where he scored seven goals in 29 games.

However, with the club suffering relegation to the second tier, Vardy is set to move on, and it has been claimed that the Owls are interested in the 39-year-old.

Yet, a move won’t be straightforward, as reports suggest Feyenoord are also keen on the striker.

Obviously, they are a huge club who expect to compete for trophies domestically, and they will also play in Europe, whilst you would presume they could blow Wednesday out of the water financially.

Therefore, if an offer does arrive from the Rotterdam outfit, it could be difficult for the Owls to compete.

So, when asked by FLW if the Owls need to be realistic, Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick McKenna admitted it is a long shot to think Vardy would sign, as he stressed it’s the emotional pull that means it’s even a possibility.

The interest from Feyenoord just reinforces that Vardy can still play at a higher level than League One.

I know the Dutch top flight isn’t the Premier League, but Feyenoord are a recognised European team, so I always thought that signing Vardy was a remote enough prospect, and this does serve as a reminder of the competition we could be up against.

If he is to come to Wednesday, it would be based on emotion for Vardy, if he wants to buy into the romance of playing for his boyhood club. But, whether he would still hold that now, having had a career he may not have envisaged in his 20s, who knows.

As well, he might want a bit more financial security by getting a top league wage for another season or two. There was always going to be competition for a player like Vardy, and us being in League One does put us in a weaker bargaining position.”

Sheffield Wednesday must do all they can to sign Jamie Vardy

Most would agree that this is going to be very difficult for Wednesday to pull off, and in some cases you could argue that you shouldn’t waste too much time on one player.

But, Vardy is the sort of statement signing that could really kickstart a bright new era for the Owls, so, if they have to wait for him to assess his options, then it will still be worth it if he signs.

As he has shown in Serie A, Vardy can still score goals, and whilst he isn’t the same player that helped Leicester win the Premier League, he remains sharp off the mark, he is a great finisher, and he would bring a strong mentality to the dressing room.

If Feyenoord do make a serious move for Vardy, it’s hard to see him joining Wednesday, but we do know he was a fan, so you can’t rule anything out.

Ultimately, this will be one to watch, as the ex-England international will want his future sorted before pre-season, and if Sheffield Wednesday can convince Vardy to sign, it will be a huge coup for the new regime.
