Freitas makes the move from Varzim SC to the Reds on a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee.
The 23-year-old forward becomes the latest addition to Joey O’Brien’s squad ahead of the 2026 season, strengthening the Reds’ attacking options as preparations continue for the year ahead.
Freitas arrives in Dublin following an impressive spell in the Portuguese third division, where he has scored six goals in 14 appearances this season. The striker brings hunger, intensity, and a proven eye for goal, and is eager to make his mark at Tolka Park.
Rodrigo joined the squad for pre-season training today, having arrived in Dublin on Sunday evening.
Freitas is looking forward to a new challenge at Tolka Park: “I’ve heard great things about Shelbourne Football Club. From the conversations I’ve had, there’s a strong vision and real ambition for success. The manager and his staff were a huge draw in coming here, and I’m looking forward to improving and evolving as a player at Tolka Park.”
Shelbourne FC Head Coach Joey O’Brien spoke on Freitas’ arrival at the Reds: “We’re delighted to sign Rodrigo on a long-term deal. He’s a player we’ve been tracking for a while and has shown a real desire to play for Shelbourne. He has high technical ability and is a strong goal threat. He’s a great addition to the squad and another top option in that area of the pitch.”
Shelbourne FC Technical Director Luke Byrne added: “We’ve been very impressed with Rodrigo, both as a player and as a person. He was determined to join the club and wants to help the team be successful. We think he complements the group very well, he’s a goalscorer and plays with real intensity. We’re really happy to have finally got him in the building.”
