German football is in shock after the death of former Saarbrücken player Tamara Mendler, wife of Markus Mendler. The 32-year-old died only days after giving birth to their second child.

FC 08 Homburg said in a statement that she passed away in the early hours of Saturday after a brief but severe illness, and had recently delivered a healthy baby boy.

The news emerged hours after Markus Mendler, formerly with FC Nüremberg and now at Homburg, missed the weekend match against Frankfurt for personal reasons.

It expressed profound shock, offered condolences to Markus, their two children and relatives, and pledged unconditional support. Staff and team-mates were described as standing with him in solidarity, offering help in every possible way.
