Eintracht were beaten 4-2 on penalties by Borussia Dortmund in the DFB Cup second round, after the game ended 1-1 after extra time.
Two changes Head coach Dino Toppmöller made two changes to the Eagles team that started Saturday’s 2-0 victory over FC St. Pauli. Hugo Larsson and Mario Götze were brought into the side, with Ellyes Skhiri and Can Uzun dropping to the bench. Early chance for BVB Dortmund carved out the first clear-cut opening of the contest after just seven minutes. Julian Ryerson did well to pick out Karim Adeyemi, who steered a left-footed effort narrowly wide of the target. Eintracht strike first Barely 60 seconds later, the Eagles took the lead with a brilliantly worked goal. Götze played a perfectly weighted pass into the run of Ansgar Knauff, who kept his composure in front of goalkeeper Gregor Kobel to fire a low shot into the bottom right-hand corner.
Solid at the back Eintracht’s back three of Rasmus Kristensen, Robin Koch und Arthur Theate were rarely troubled in the first half, while Ritsu Doan, Farès Chaibi, Hugo Larsson and Nathaniel Brown covered plenty of ground as they repeatedly dropped back to help the Eagles defence, preventing Dortmund from hitting their stride. One-goal half-time lead Theate stung Kobel’s palms with a powerful long-range drive before the break, as Toppmöller’s side took a slender lead into half-time.
Brandt equalises Dortmund restored parity just three minutes into the second half. Eintracht were unable to clear a low cross towards the back post, where Julian Brandt was on hand to prod home the equaliser from close range. Frankfurt push for second Eintracht almost retook the lead on the counter-attack in the 69th minute, but Kobel pulled off a smart save to parry Knauff’s effort around the post. Doan rattled the crossbar with ten minutes remaining and Kobel did well to deny second-half substitute Uzun not long after that, while Michael Zetterer thwarted Fabio Silva at the other end as the tie ended all square after 90 minutes.
Battling display in extra time
Toppmöller’s charges continued to throw themselves into challenges and force BVB into errors in extra time, but Doan was unable to find the net with a header (92’) and Kobel produced another excellent stop to parry Chaibi’s powerful long-range drive to safety (102’). Zetterer had to palm another long-range effort from Nico Schlotterbeck behind for a corner with two minutes remaining, but there was no separating the teams at the end of the additional 30.
Doan and Chaibi fall short
While Dortmund managed to convert all four of their efforts in the subsequent shoot-out, Doan missed the target with his attempt and Chaibi was denied again by Kobel, as a dramatic second-round tie ended in heart-breaking defeat for Eintracht.
