Lautaro Martinez “should have been taken off” in yesterday’s Serie A clash between Juventus and Inter Milan.

That is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They offer unsparing criticism of the Inter captain after a wasteful performance.

Inter captain Lautaro Martinez had an evening to forget against Juventus yesterday.

As is often the case in the Derby d’Italia, the Argentine did not produce his best form.

Overall, it was not the worst of performances from Martinez. The Inter captain did work hard to lead the line defensively and link up play.

But in terms of his finishing, Martinez looked very clunky. He had a few good chances, but never came close to scoring with any of them.

The Gazzetta give a particularly harsh assessment of Martinez’s performance.

The newspaper argue that Inter coach Simone Inzaghi should have substituted Martinez off.

The Nerazzurri coach was not afraid to make some bold changes in the second half.

The likes of Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco came off around the hour mark.

And striker Mehdi Taremi, who started in attack alongside Lautaro Martinez, stayed on the pitch right until the end.

But Martinez seemed to be one player who Inzaghi wouldn’t consider removing.

And in the view of the Gazzetta, that was wrong. At a certain point, it had become blatantly obvious that it just wasn’t going to be Martinez’s night.
