We have reached the first international break of the season, and there are plenty of questions for Sheffield United to answer after suffering three consecutive defeats across all competitions.

The Blades’ difficult run began at Bramall Lane last weekend, when Chris Wilder’s side were beaten 1-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Championship. It was a disappointing afternoon for United, who had competed well against a side with plenty of Premier League experience, only to be punished late on.

That defeat was followed by another 1-0 setback in midweek, this time away from home against Fleetwood Town in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Wilder had already voiced his frustration at the congested fixture schedule before the trip to Highbury Stadium, and his concerns were arguably justified as United struggled to find any rhythm against the League Two outfit.

The Cod Army eventually found the breakthrough in the second half when a deep cross took a significant deflection off Norrington-Davies, leaving Michael Cooper with little chance.

That result meant the Blades went into their final fixture before the international break looking to avoid a third straight defeat. Unfortunately for Wilder, they could not get the response they wanted.

Blades Suffer Three Defeats on the Spin

United travelled to Stoke City on Saturday and initially looked on course to end the run after Kalvin Phillips produced a moment of quality to put the visitors ahead. The midfielder’s free-kick found the back of the net and gave Sheffield United a platform from which to build.

However, the Blades were unable to protect their advantage and Stoke eventually turned the game around to secure a 2-1 victory with two stunning strikes from long range.

Three defeats in the space of a week is not the way Wilder would have wanted his side to enter the international break.

Now, some sections of the fanbase have started to question if Sheffield United are going to be involved in a relegation battle this season. Unfortunately for the Blades, the early season statistics don’t read too pretty. According to Opta’s data, Sheffield United currently have the second-lowest expected goals figure in the Championship as well as registering the lowest number of touches in the opposition box compared to any other team in the league.

At the other end of the pitch, the Blades have given up the most amount of shots to the opposition in the Championship.

On the other hand, this upcoming international break will provide Wilder and his coaching staff to work on various aspects in training ready to tackle Lincoln City at home in October.
