Lisandro Martinez has been pictured training at Carrington ahead of his long-awaited return to action for Manchester United.

The centre-half has been out of action since the start of February when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a home defeat to Crystal Palace, ruling him out of the remainder of the campaign.

Martinez has yet to oversee an injury-free season since signing for the Reds in 2022. According to Transfermarkt, he has missed a whopping 76 matches across all competitions for United while accumulating 91 appearances.

Still, the fact he is so impactful in the times he is available to play means he is almost certain to slot straight back into the starting XI as soon as he’s deemed fully fit and ready – but they won’t rush him to get him to that stage.

United will ease Martinez back into action

Journalist Rich Fay revealed on Wednesday afternoon that the 27-year-old was ‘training on the grass’ in preparation for his personal 2025/2026 term getting underway, adding that the side ‘have missed him greatly’ during his lengthy absence.

Martinez will likely be chomping at the bit to get back on the turf for United – and not only to try and impact the team’s dismal form. He’ll be doing his utmost to catch the eye of Lionel Scaloni to ensure he is again part of Argentina’s World Cup squad next summer, having lifted the trophy with his nation following their triumph in 2022.

The former Ajax man has frequently been a mainstay for Scaloni in recent years, but his extended spell on the sidelines has paved the way for alternatives to stake their claims for starting spots.

It won’t help matters that United are only playing one game a week, either, as Martinez will have even fewer opportunities to really showcase that he is back to his best.
