Gary Neville has said signing Cole Palmer from Chelsea could be 'gold' for Manchester United.

Manchester United have been tentatively linked with a move to sign Palmer, after Chelsea missed out on European football for next season. Palmer was born in Manchester and came through the ranks at Manchester City, before moving to West London in 2023.

The 23-year-old has been a huge success at Chelsea, where he's scored 54 goals in 131 games to emerge as one of thePremier League's most influential talents.

Neville was discussing his former side with ex-teammateRio Ferdinand on his Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, and said the Red Devils need to go back to 'no risk' signings to challenge for major trophies again.

He talked about United's history of signing proven top talent from rival clubs, and said Palmer, who grew up as a fan of the club, could be a signing of that ilk.

"When Manchester United signed Bryan Robson, Ron Atkinson said something along the lines of ‘this is no risk, this is gold - I think Harry Kane would have been that for United, that would have been gold. You [Ferdinand] joining from Leeds, Wazza [Rooney] joining from Everton, Roy Keane from Nottingham Forest – those are all 'gold'.

"If Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of Man United he would never have allowed Harry Kane to be anywhere else, he would have made sure he came to Old Trafford. Declan Rice would have been the same. Sir Alex would have been all over those two.

Neville says Cole Palmer signing 'could be gold' for Manchester United

"There’s talk of Cole Palmer and that looks like a signing that could be gold for Manchester United if he came to Old Trafford.

"I don’t think it would happen though, I think Chelsea will hang onto him. But there’s very few signings like that available, it’s only every few years that these type of players become available."
