Manchester United are making late moves in the January transfer window as they navigate a challenging season.
Talks are underway to secure Lecce left-back Patrick Dorgu after manager Ruben Amorim gave his approval.
Dorgu is not the only full-back United are closing in on.
Cerro Porteno’s Diego Leon has already undergone his medical and a formal announcement of his transfer is imminent.
The teenager is one of the best upcoming left-backs in world football.
However, the potential arrivals of Dorgu and Leon could signal the end of Harry Amass at United.
Amass is a highly-rated left-back in the United academy. He has been part of various matchday squads for the senior team but has yet to make his debut.
United spent the majority of last season without a natural left-footed full-back due to injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.
While Malacia returned late last year, his underwhelming performances have led the club to consider a potential loan move for him.
Many people expected Amass to thrive at senior level, but he has never been handed a chance.
Despite impressing during the pre-season tour to the United States, previous manager Erik ten Hag felt Amass wasn’t physically ready to compete at the top level.
The 17-year-old is a regular for United’s under-18s and has also made appearances for the under-21s.
It is tough to see him break into Amorim’s set-up if Dorgu and Leon join the club.
The next logical step for Amass would be to go on loan and prove his worth this month.
If he fails to impress, United could look to cash in and boost their financial situation. However, the fans will be shocked if he leaves without debuting.
