Atlético de Madrid delivered a blistering first half to overwhelm Barcelona in the Copa semi-final first leg at the Metropolitano, underlining Diego Pablo Simeone’s pre-match calls for faith and energy.

El Periódico Mediterráneo reports that, with Pedri and Raphinha out, Simeone sensed vulnerability and named an ultra-offensive side.

Giuliano, Lookman, Griezmann and Julián all started, and the opening 45 minutes were breathless. Giuliano repeatedly attacked the space, while Lookman and Julián exchanged goals and assists. Griezmann, already the Copa’s leading scorer, also orchestrated play.

Koke and Llorente, from the old guard, shone too. The frenetic first period ended with four goals and the stadium in full voice.

Simeone said he trusted absolutely in his team and their work, praising the support and the players’ reading of the game.

He was still demanding, noting a lack of forward intensity after the break and saying he would have liked to keep attacking as before.

With LaLiga already out of reach, Atlético are leaning on knockout tournaments to chase silverware and repay their fans. Attention now turns to the Champions League last 32 tie against Brujas, where Simeone hopes this Copa version can travel.
