Don Goodman gives his thoughts on whether Wrexham need to spend big this January.

Wrexham's ascension up the English football pyramid seems like it may continue this season, with the Red Dragons sitting in third place after 20 games.

Having secured back-to-back promotions from the National League and League Two, many believed Phil Parkinson's side would slow down this season with little turnover in their squad.

However, the bond this team has built is strong and has been lightly added to through the timely additions of players like George Dobson and Ollie Rathbone, who have both been superb this season.

While they have had struggles in the attacking third, at the other end of the pitch they have been ruthless with just 13 goals conceded and 12 clean sheets, evidencing their brilliant start.

Still, for the Red Dragons to secure automatic promotion they will have to be at their best with Birmingham City and Wycombe Wanderers on fire.

This may see them dip into the January market and how they approach it could determine whether they can make it all the way to the Championship.

Don Goodman urges Wrexham to approach January with caution

When asked whether Wrexham's owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, should make significant investments in the January transfer window to boost their promotion chances, Don Goodman, speaking via CoinPoker, said: "Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mclehenney need to remember it's all about balance. If they were to go big in the January window and go all-out for promotion, they could very easily damage the equilibrium and spirit in the dressing room. I experienced a similar scenario at Wolves, when we brought in around half a dozen players and it upset our spirit within the dressing room.

"Although I'm sure they've got the money to buy players and spend big, they have to get the balance right. If they're going to bring players in, they need to make sure the policy is quality over quantity.

"If you look at the team which drew with Cambridge at the weekend, most of them were at the club last season in League Two. They did a little bit of business in the summer but stuck with the majority of players who did so well last season, I don't think they'll go mad in January as they didn't in the summer.

"They need to focus on bringing in players who will go straight into the starting lineup."

A striker could be all Wrexham need

It is hard to disagree with Goodman, as the harmony at Wrexham seems of paramount importance to their success.

If they were to make just the one signing this window, then targeting a new frontman has to be the priority, with the likes of Paul Mullin, Steven Fletcher and Ollie Palmer struggling to score goals in Jack Marriot's absence.

Previously, transfer guru, Alan Nixon, has stated that Parkinson's side are going to chase a striker with goalscoring experience in the Championship.

This could see moves for strikers like Tom Bradshaw, Patrick Bamford or Devante Cole, who have all struggled for game time this season. Meanwhile, Manchester United's Ethan Wheatley has been linked and, while that is a different direction, his prolific nature at youth level could see him net frequently for the Red Dragons.
