Simon Grayson has joined League of Ireland side Cork City as advisor to the board. The former Sunderland and Leeds United manager will oversee the search for a new boss after Gerard Nash left last month.
The club said in a statement that he will work with directors to finalise the first-team appointment and review football structures. The brief is intended to help City return to, and stay in, the Premier Division.
Former Sunderland midfielder David Meyler is leading the interim team with Liam Kearney and Mark McNulty, and is said to be in contention for the permanent post.
Grayson took the Sunderland job in summer 2017 after relegation from the Premier League. He began with a 1-1 draw against Derby County, won at Norwich City, then drew at Sheffield Wednesday. A 2-0 defeat by Leeds United preceded 12 winless games, and his reign ended after a 3-3 draw with Bolton Wanderers.
He later managed Bradford City, Blackpool and Fleetwood Town, then moved to Bengaluru in summer 2022. After leading Lalitpur City to the Nepal Super League title, he returned last summer with Hartlepool United, leaving in October following a 1-1 FA Cup fourth qualifying round draw at Gainsborough Trinity. The ex-Leicester City and Aston Villa full-back has managed around 800 games with four EFL promotions, plus trophies in India and Nepal.
