The Pilgrims sit two points adrift of sixth-place Stevenage with just one game remaining, and must beat already relegated Northampton Town to have a chance of competing for promotion back to the Championship once the regular season is over.

Argyle appeared to be threatened by the prospect of relegation midway through the campaign, but they have successfully turned their fortunes around and are instead vying for a play-off spot.

Plymouth beat Port Vale 2-1 last Saturday, meaning that they have a chance of catching Stevenage, should Alex Revell's men fail to beat Wigan Athletic.

As well as ensuring they produce the goods against Vale, Tom Cleverley's side also need Luton Town to drop points in their encounter with Bolton Wanderers, who have already secured a play-off place.

Plymouth Argyle cannot be surprised by accelerating transfer interest in star striker

If Argyle land a top-six finish in League One, having occupied a relegation zone spot midway through the season, it will be one of the most impressive tales from the third tier this term.

Meanwhile, star striker Lorent Tolaj has been a consistently dangerous figure in the Pilgrims' attack this term, notching 17 goals and seven assists in 32 league appearances.

Only likely golden boot winner Dom Ballard, Stockport County's Kyle Wooton, and Exeter City ace Jayden Wareham have scored more goals than Tolaj in League One this season.

As a result of his clinical attacking exploits, the 24-year-old has attracted plenty of transfer interest, which will not surprise Plymouth owner Simon Hallett, nor any other key figures at Home Park.

According to Alan Nixon via Patreon, Sheffield United, Preston North End, and Leicester City are interested in Tolaj amid a £1.2million valuation.

Meanwhile, as per Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke on X, Derby County and Millwall are also eyeing moves for the former Port Vale hotshot.

However, the argument could be made that the Rams and the Lions should turn their transfer attention elsewhere if they manage to clinch promotion to the Premier League.

Simon Hallett knows what Pilgrims must do to retain Lorent Tolaj as transfer interest swirls

Argyle only signed Tolaj from Vale last summer, but the ever-heightening transfer interest in his services suggests that he will be playing his football away from Devon next term.

Meanwhile, the former Aldershot Town star's recent performances have been particularly eye-catching, as he has notched three goals and three assists in his last five games.

Cleverley needs Tolaj at his best once again this Saturday, as Plymouth vie to beat Northampton and book their spot in this season's League One play-offs.

Should the Pilgrims land a top-six place with the 24-year-old on such prolific form, it will hand them an advantage over their play-off opponents.

Meanwhile, Argyle owner Hallett will be well aware that his side must earn promotion to the Championship to retain Tolaj, amid such high-profile interest.
