Simon Jordan has taken a fresh swipe at Rob Edwards over his exit from Middlesbrough as he looks to keep Wolves in the Premier League.

After a surprise upturn in form, Wolverhampton Wanderers will be hoping to complete the great escape from relegation in the Premier League under former Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards.

Wolves made a nightmare start to the season as they picked up just two points from their first 10 games under former manager Vitor Pereira, resulting in his sacking in early November, and Edwards was appointed as his replacement.

However, the move was not without controversy as Edwards had only been in charge of Middlesbrough for 15 games after taking over at the Riverside Stadium in the summer, and his side were sitting second in the Championship table at the time of his exit.

Edwards initially struggled to make an impact at Molineux as he lost his first seven games, but Wolves have gradually improved during the course of his tenure, and back-to-back home victories over Aston Villa and Liverpool have given them an outside chance of survival against all the odds.

Wolves are still 11 points from safety with just eight games remaining, and they have played a match more than the teams above them, but they do have a favourable fixture list in the remaining weeks of the season, including West Ham United, Leeds United, Tottenham Hotspur, Sunderland and Burnley.

After their dramatic late win over Liverpool on Tuesday night, former Crystal Palace owner and pundit Simon Jordan claimed it would be an incredible achievement if Wolves managed to stay up, but he admitted he would like to see Edwards suffer relegation after walking out on Middlesbrough earlier in the season.

When asked on talkSPORT if he wants to be proven right about Edwards making a mistake in switching clubs, Jordan replied: "No, I don't, I'm happy to be wrong in that respect.

"Do I think he was a treacherous hound? Yeah, I do.

"Do I think that's changed? No.

"I want him to go down, not the football club.

"I want him to get precisely what his disloyalty deserves.

"Unfortunately, that's the casualty, but the football club was already going down before he got there.

"The bottom line is what I wanted was him to have some loyalty to the people that gave him an opportunity, that was my fundamental issue with Rob Edwards, and I don't change from that," Jordan continued.

"Should he have gone in and done a better job? Yes, of course, he should have gone in and done a better job.

"He wasn't brought in to do a worse job, was he?"

Middlesbrough and Wolves have both benefitted from controversial Rob Edwards situation

Middlesbrough supporters were understandably furious when Edwards left the club just months into his tenure, and it is fair to say Wolves fans were a little underwhelmed by his appointment, but they may now both be relatively content with their managerial situations.

Edwards' departure could have been a fatal blow to Boro's automatic promotion hopes, but they have arguably improved under his successor Kim Hellberg, and although the likes of Ipswich Town and Millwall have closed in on them in recent weeks, they remain in second place as the season enters its final stages.

While talk of a potential great escape is gathering pace at Molineux, it will likely be an impossible task for Edwards to keep Wolves in the Premier League, but he has certainly steadied the ship, and current performances will help to build confidence and belief ahead of their return to the Championship next season.
