Simon Rusk shares his previous injury hurdles while analysing Ross Stewart's past couple of seasons.
In Southampton's camp, playing against the Premier League's Big-Six boys is alone enough to earn the status of a regular starter. I know Simon Rusk doesn't judge his squad with this benchmark but Saints often seem to buy into this notion.
And it should remain this way to bring Southampton's collective good, right? In all honesty, I don't want to disappoint a good majority of the fanbase but Ross Stewart's unconventional situation feels a good mystery in itself.
Basically, imagine getting trusted to play against Arsenal and Tottenham but still worrying about playing again. In short, that's the damage constant fatigues do when added to the absence of both managers who sought to back his strengths.
Overall, Stewart's Premier League hopes might be over here unless Rusk makes up his mind to shuffle his attacking ranks.
Coming to the slight positives, one thing is certain that the frontman will not feel completely isolated with Rusk's ideas. The reason being that Rusk resonates well with Stewart's stop-start Southampton journey.
Sharing an annoying fitness anecdote from his playing days, Rusk said to the Daily Echo: "It's incredibly frustrating. I've experienced it myself and it's a difficult thing to go through, putting everything to one side and you can't do the thing you love."
Rusk must be praised for mentioning his helpless stance on selecting Stewart, otherwise, questions would have arisen in the future regarding any potential rift between the duo. Further, the 28-year-old will not interpret these words as an injustice served to him.
