Leeds United Women ran out 2-1 winners over tier-above Hull City Ladies in the FA Women’s National League Cup First Round this afternoon, thanks to an early finish from Ellie White and header from Alice Hughes with ten minutes to go.
White opened the scoring eight minutes in, after Amy Woodruff’s flick-on was lobbed over the Hull ‘keeper, and after the hosts equalised early in the second half, Alice Hughes secured the win ten minutes before time, heading in a corner at the back post.
After the game, Whites’ Boss Simon Wood said: “I think the first half was very much a controlled performance by us, we created a lot of chances, and it was a great strike by Ellie (White) to take the lead early on.
“I think what we have as a group at the minute is a team that can play in different ways, when we need to we can attack, and when we need to we can defend.”
On taking an early lead: “We want to get in positions in games where we’re not having to wait until the last few minutes to win a game, so getting an early goal settles everyone down.
“I’m really pleased for Ellie as well. She sat on the bench last week, she came on and responded today.
“The way we try and approach every game that we play is that we want to win, and we want to compete, if we start performing the way we know we can, which I think we’re starting to get there with, I think we’re now seeing it on a more consistent basis.
“There’s no complacency with us because it’s on to the next one now, and that becomes the next challenge because we want to put another win on there, and we want another performance that wins us a game of football.
“Really excited by it,” Simon added on the FA Cup clash next weekend. “When we had that result against Norton on penalties, it was important for us as a club because we want to represent the club in every competition that we can.
“We have got to make sure that we go with our game plan, we’re not complacent, and we go and work hard from the first until last minute to make sure we get the result we want to get.”
