Simone Inzaghi heaped praise on Inter after his side eased past 10-man Empoli on Wednesday evening to return to the win column. The reigning Scudetto holders pulled off a superb 3-0 victory at Stadio Carlo Castellani, providing a perfect response to a frustrating 4-4 draw against Juventus last weekend.
Marcus Thuram was on the receiving end of Saba Goglichidze’s cynical tackle in the 31st minute. It earned the Empoli defender a straight red card, helping Inter establish firm control of the proceedings. However, the visitors failed to break the deadlock before halftime.
Inter had to wait until the 50th minute to open the scoring through Davide Frattesi. The Italian midfielder doubled his tally midway through the second half before Lautaro Martinez capped off a morale-boosting triumph with his fourth away league goal this season.
“The boys were very good. It wasn’t easy,” Inzaghi said after the game, as reported by Gianluca Di Marzio. “We have seen in recent months what Empoli have done at home. We had a first half in which we managed the ball not fast enough, but I told the boys that in the long run, they would get tired. It’s a great win that we wanted with all our might.”
Inter secured an all-important win in Tuscany to stay within touching distance of pacesetters Napoli. With Antonio Conte’s side taking on Atalanta at the weekend, the Nerazzurri could whittle down a four-point gap as they face newly promoted Venezia at Giuseppe Meazza in a routine-looking fixture.
