Joshua Kimmich has once again taken a clear position on Lennart Karl’s possible World Cup nomination, underlining the clear stance he has taken in recent weeks
After the Champions League match against Sporting Lisbon, the national team captain had already emphasized that a regular FC Bayern player must automatically be a candidate for the DFB team. After the 2-2 draw against Mainz, Kimmich now added: „It’s simply the truth. If someone plays regularly at Bayern and regularly performs well and is German, he belongs in the national team in the long term – if he can confirm that over weeks and months,“ explained the 30-year-old
Kimmich was essentially repeating his earlier statement that every permanent member of Bayern’s starting XI must also be relevant for national team coach Julian Nagelsmann – especially in a phase in which the record champions are playing at the top nationally and internationally
Karl himself had once again provided arguments with his performance against Mainz. The 17-year-old scored his sixth professional goal, but deliberately remained in the background afterwards and refrained from making any big statements
His goal celebration caused speculation afterwards, but remained a bit of a secret. Karl first rubbed his fingers and then held his index finger in front of his mouth.
When asked, the teenager simply explained: „It was something completely normal.“ Kimmich could only speculate with a grin and joked: „Maybe it was about a new contract.“

In fact, Karl’s future at FC Bayern has long been settled. When he celebrates his 18th birthday on 22 February, his contract will automatically be extended until 2029 – including a significant adjustment to his salary. The development contract, which is standard for youth players, was already secured for the long term in the summer. Those responsible have thus created facts at an early stage.
