PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Thorns won 3-1 against Club América Femenil as the 2024/25 Concacaf W Champions Cup continued in Group B on Wednesday at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon.
Christine Sinclair started the goal count for the Thorns with a stunner from outside the box in the 13’ after the América defense lost the ball.
Sinclair extended the lead for Portland in the 28’ to net her brace after converting on a service from Marie Muller.
Reilyn Turner struck the third goal for the Thorns in the 51’ off a corner kick, scoring her first goal as part of the Portland Thorns squad.
Club América responded in the 53’ from a great play from FIFA Women’s World Champion Irene Guerrero, who shot through three Portland defenders to send a volley to the back of the net.
Las Águilas got a chance to pull another one back in the 83’ after Karen Luna passed the ball into the box, where star striker Sarah Luebbert tried a header, only to go over the crossbar.
The two-time Liga MX Femenil champions pushed for a comeback but could not score again, as Portland collected its first three points in the W Champions Cup.
The Thorns' next challenge will be against fellow NWSL side San Diego Wave on September 18 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego.
América Femenil will try to bounce back when they host Santa Fe FC on September 19 at Estadio Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City.
