Sir Gareth Southgate’s quiet visit to a Leeds post office delighted staff, after the former England manager dropped in to buy stamps and agreed to a photo.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, he arrived at Moortown Post Office just after 11am on Friday 19 June, where postmistress Ree Williams and colleague Meshie Roth were catching breath after a late morning rush.
He walked in unnoticed, asked for a book of stamps, then calmly stuck one on a card. The pair felt they recognised him from football but could not place him, so Roth asked if he was from the game. He confirmed he was.
With no one else waiting, they requested a photo and he happily obliged. When Williams asked if he was watching the football, he replied that it was too late for him. She still had not worked out exactly who he was.
Minutes later, another customer saw their pictures and suggested it was Sir Gareth Southgate, at which point it clicked. The encounter lasted only three or four minutes but left them beaming.
Williams first shared the photos privately, then posted them on the branch’s Facebook page on Sunday night. By Monday the post was taking off, and by Tuesday afternoon it had reached more than 100,000 people with hundreds of likes and shares. She said the reaction shows the fondness many still feel for Southgate, describing him as humble, lovely and a gentleman.
