Michael Carrick has come in and steadied the Manchester United ship after a turbulent 18-month spell under Ruben Amorim.
Four wins, including a famous Manchester derby triumph and victory over league leaders Arsenal, and a late draw against West Ham United, have delighted the fanbase.
However, the buoyant atmosphere around the club has been shattered due to the noise generated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent interview with Sky.
The United co-owner’s controversial remark on immigration has forced the club to issue a statement, while multiple fan groups have come out and attacking the INEOS chairman over his racist views.
“The UK has been colonised by immigrants, really, hasn’t it?,” the British billionaire was quoted as saying. “I mean, the population of the UK was 58 million in 2020, now it’s 70 million. That’s 12 million people.”
The political leadership in the UK has condemned Sir Jim for his choice of words, with the 73-year-old issuing a statement of his own.
That has done little to control the damage with United’s majority owners, the Glazers, deeply unhappy with the situation as per The Mirror.
The greedy American family do not care about the on-pitch performances, but Ratcliffe‘s words have the potential to affect future sponsorships and current partnerships, which explains why they were forced to step in.
As a result, the co-owner has been forced to apologise for his remarks, with concerns mounting over whether the words could boil over and affect the club’s plans for a new stadium.
“Sir Jim Ratcliffe has apologised to the Glazers for his controversial comments about immigration which brought shame on Manchester United.
“It’s understood Ratcliffe contacted his fellow co-owners to explain himself – and for the furore he had caused.
“The Glazers are said to have huge concerns about what effect the backlash from Ratcliffe’s comments will have on United’s relationship with sponsors and commercial partners moving forward.”
United will be keen for this storm to die down soon, as the team are in great spirits and they can ill-afford any distractions as Michael Carrick seeks to take them back into the Champions League.
