Chelsea are prepared to listen to offers for Alejandro Garnacho only a year after signing him from Manchester United, with Sky Sports reporting that the club would prefer a permanent sale this summer. The winger arrived for £40m last year, yet the latest position suggests Stamford Bridge is already moving towards a decisive outcome.
The asking price has been set at 50m euros (£42.6m), a figure that would allow Chelsea to make a modest profit if a buyer meets their terms. As reported by Sky Sports, there is interest from clubs in Europe, the Premier League and Saudi Arabia, while Chelsea are working alongside the player and his representatives to find a solution.
Garnacho, now 22, wants regular first-team football and that is not guaranteed in west London. That point feels central to the situation. He has not yet returned to pre-season training because his future is expected to be resolved in the next fortnight, a clear indication that all parties are trying to move quickly.
From Chelsea’s perspective, this is a practical market decision. Garnacho managed eight goals and four assists in 43 appearances across all competitions, numbers that only tell part of the story of what Sky Sports described as an underwhelming debut season. He never fully established himself and, in a squad where competition is fierce and patience can be limited, that matters.
There was optimism when he signed a long-term contract after being told he could leave Manchester United following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham in 2025. Yet one year later, the sense is that Chelsea are open to cutting the cycle short rather than carrying uncertainty into the new campaign.
A loan move does not appear to be the preferred route. Chelsea want clarity, and ideally a full departure. In the current market, that approach fits a club seeking to streamline options, create room and ensure the new head coach has a squad aligned with his demands.
That broader reset has been underlined by new boss Xabi Alonso, who has wasted little time in setting out the values he expects. Speaking after starting work as Chelsea head coach, he said: “For me, in football, there are principles that are unnegotiable.”

He then expanded on the standards required: “You need to be willing to pay the price to compete at the highest level. You can’t hold back anything. You need to give everything you have for the benefit of the team. The team is always the most important thing.”
Those lines are significant in the context of Garnacho’s situation. Chelsea are trying to build a group that fits a collective idea, and Alonso made that point again when he said: “We need to create that culture, which is a process.” He added, “I think there is a strong culture already built; there’s an important core of the team.”
His final message was equally revealing: “That culture we are able to build here will, 100 per cent, be transmitted onto Stamford Bridge.” Chelsea’s transfer decisions this summer are likely to reflect that thinking at every level.
From a Chelsea fan perspective, this feels like the right call, even if it is slightly frustrating that Garnacho never truly got going. There was excitement when he arrived because he brought Premier League experience, direct running and a bit of edge in the final third. Eight goals and four assists in 43 games is not disastrous, but it never felt like he nailed down a role or made himself impossible to leave out.
If Chelsea can sell for £42.6m after paying £40m, that is smart business in a difficult market. Supporters want the club to be ruthless when things are not quite fitting, and this looks like one of those moments. There is no point dragging out a situation if the player wants regular starts and the manager is building around total commitment to the team.
The really encouraging part of this report is Alonso’s messaging. Hearing phrases like “principles that are unnegotiable” and “The team is always the most important thing” is exactly what fans want after an inconsistent season. Chelsea need a clear identity, stronger standards and players fully aligned with the manager.
If Garnacho moves on, most supporters will wish him well, but the bigger picture is what matters. Chelsea need a squad built for cohesion, intensity and accountability. If this sale helps move the club closer to that, then it is a deal worth doing.
