Sky Sports confirm Ben Davies in talks to move to Birmingham City

Rangers are reportedly finally set to get shot of the ‘excellent’ Ben Davies after Sky Sports confirmed Birmingham City’s namesake Chris was close to completing a shock move for the former Liverpool ‘player’ (never made a single senior appearance) amid staggering tabloid claims the deal could even be completed on Friday.

The ex-Liverpool coach apparently seeks defensive quality at the back and is looking for Davies as a loan with an option to buy.

The problem, of course, is Birmingham are League One and Davies’ £30,000 salary at Ibrox is as much a problem for them as Connor Goldson’s £40,000 was. That move fell flat and he ended up in Cyprus.

So how Davies’ lot can afford his Rangers counterpart’s salary without Rangers’ help we don’t quite know – Rangers need this guy off the wage bill, and League One just don’t do salaries beyond about £10,000.

So they’d be asking the ex-Preston man to take a big loss on his wages, but for him to be a senior pick and big choice in St Andrews might be tempting.

It would be a drop of everything for him – wages, club size, fanbase, stadium size – the only thing he’d gained would be playing time – just like Sam Lammers went down 50% to join Twente, Davies would be losing 66%, unless Rangers foot a chunk of it.

It’s a curious one, Davies is well down the pecking order and as Ibrox Noise reported months ago, he was told he could leave this summer – but in all honesty we’re just happy to get him off the roster even if we do have to foot some of his wages to help it.

We also hope he shines at the lower level and the move is made permanent.

More as we get it.
