Viktor Gyokeres’ future is likely to be one of the hottest sagas of the summer transfer window.

In fairness, what team would turn him down?

The prolific frontman is putting up numbers that are simply unfathomable to viewers; 40 goals and 10 assists in 41 appearances for Sporting Lisbon is nothing short of world-class.

While there’ll be questions over his ability to replicate such form in the Premier League, he’s already proven he’s capable of doing so in England. From 2020/2021 to 2022/2023, Gyokeres recorded 41 goals and 15 assists for Swansea City and, subsequently, Coventry City. He also found the back of the net six times in eight Champions League fixtures this term.

Alas, Manchester United fans have been desperate for Ruben Amorim to use his Sporting ties to sign his ex-protegee ever since he was first linked with the Old Trafford vacancy, though they will face competition from a host of other suitors adamant about sealing his signature.

Gyokeres’ move to flying Premier League outfit dismissed

One team believed to be in the race is Nottingham Forest, who are now preparing for a campaign in which they’re likely to be competing on all fronts – including in Europe. To do so, depth is absolutely essential, and owner Evangelos Marinakis knows that.

A report last week claimed the Midlands outfit had initiated talks with Gyokeres’ representatives in hopes of clinching an early agreement. Marinakis isn’t shy when it comes to splashing the cash to strengthen the squad, and The Telegraph previously suggested Sporting would accept a cut-price fee of £63 million to sanction their talisman’s exit – despite his contract containing an £83m release clause.

However, Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg has today provided an update on Gyokeres’ situation amid rumoured Forest interest, writing: “As exclusively revealed in October, Viktor Gyökeres can leave Sporting for €60-70m in summer, as there’s a verbal agreement between Gyökeres and the club.

“The current and clear trend: Gyökeres will not join Forest.”
