Iraola addressed the issue after Thursday’s media duties and described the problem in calm terms, saying, “I think Joe has a muscle injury, probably around one month.” Fine. If that timeline holds, Liverpool avoid a long-term crisis. The problem is that early-season fixtures count the same as those in April, and availability at centre-back already looks thin.

Centre-back depth looks dangerously light

This is not one injury in isolation. Giovanni Leoni is still recovering from an ACL injury suffered last season. Jeremy Jacquet is only now edging back towards fitness after a lengthy spell out with a shoulder issue. Gomez has joined that list. Strip it all back and Liverpool could open the season with Virgil van Dijk and Jacquet as the only available senior centre-backs.

That is not ideal squad management, it is a gamble. Maybe a calculated one, maybe one the club believe can be managed for a few weeks, but still a gamble. Iraola admitted the squad is light in that area, which merely confirms what has been visible on the pitch and on the teamsheet.

Transfer strategy remains fixed on Bradley Barcola

Here is where Liverpool’s thinking becomes interesting. Rather than pivoting towards defensive cover, the priority remains in attack. Bradley Barcola is still the leading target and Liverpool are preparing a formal approach to Paris Saint-Germain before the window closes.

That tells you the club believe the bigger need is in the front line, or at least that the market opportunity for Barcola is stronger than the pressure to sign a centre-back now. Clubs make these calls all the time. Sometimes they look smart by October. Sometimes they look stubborn by September.

Andoni Iraola may need short-term solutions

Jacquet could feature against Leeds United, although Iraola has suggested caution over throwing him in too quickly. That is sensible. Bringing back players before they are ready is how one absence becomes two.

Still, the wider issue does not disappear. Liverpool are relying on recoveries, timing and a bit of luck. The hierarchy may yet revise the plan later in the window if circumstances worsen, but for now the stance is clear. Gomez’s setback is a concern, not a trigger.

From a Liverpool perspective, this feels too relaxed. You can talk about timelines, rehabilitation and market priorities all you want, but the reality is simple: Liverpool look short at centre-back and the season is nearly here.

Gomez missing a month might sound manageable on paper, yet supporters have seen how quickly these situations spiral. One injury becomes two, one player is rushed back, another picks up a knock, and suddenly you are patching together a back line in serious matches. That is the fear here.

Iraola deserves time, and he also deserves a balanced squad. Expecting him to begin a new league campaign with so few trusted senior options in central defence feels reckless. Virgil van Dijk can steady almost any back line, but he cannot play every role at once. If Jacquet is still being eased in, the idea that this position is not a transfer priority becomes harder to understand.

There is excitement around Bradley Barcola, and fair enough. Liverpool need quality in attack too. But supporters tend to get nervous when a clear weakness is acknowledged publicly and then effectively parked. If the club truly believe the current group can hold up, they are backing their judgement heavily.

Maybe they are right. Maybe Leoni returns well, Jacquet settles quickly and Gomez is back on schedule. But if one more defender goes down before the window shuts, this will stop looking like patience and start looking like a mistake.
