The Croatian federation announced on Monday that Slaven Bilic has returned as national team head coach, a few days after Zlatko Dalic’s departure.
Bilic’s appointment was unanimously approved by the federation’s executive board. Croatia were knocked out of the 2026 World Cup in the last 32 by Portugal, losing 1-2.

The former centre-back knows the set-up well. He previously led the Vatreni from 2006 to 2012.
He left before the most successful spell in the team’s history, which included the 2018 World Cup final under Dalic.
Now 57, Bilic has been without a club since leaving Al-Fateh in Saudi Arabia two years ago. He won 44 caps for Croatia.
He was also part of the side that finished third at the 1998 World Cup in France.
