FIFA has named Slovenian referee Slavko Vincic to take charge of the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday 19 July, part of the tournament co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Argentina.
According to Superdeporte, Vincic, 46 and an international since 2010, officiated Brazil v Morocco, Algeria v Jordan and Mexico v Ecuador at this World Cup, so Sunday will be his first knockout assignment.
He has refereed Spain five times, delivering three wins, including the Euro semi-final in Germany against France, and two draws. He also took charge of Argentina’s 2-1 defeat to Saudi Arabia at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Sunday’s fixture will be his third major final after the 2023-2024 Champions League showpiece between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund and the 2021-2022 Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers.
This season he oversaw the Champions League quarter-final second leg between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, a match noted for Eduardo Camavinga’s late sending off.
His assistants will be compatriots Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic, with Jordan’s Adham Makhadmeh as fourth official and Mohammed Al-Khalaf as reserve assistant.
