FIFA confirmed overnight from Thursday to Friday that Slavko Vincic will referee the 2026 World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The match is at MetLife Stadium, near New York, on Sunday at 21:00.

A video on social media showed the 46-year-old in tears as he learned of the decision, followed by an ovation from fellow tournament officials.

He will be assisted by compatriots Tomaz Klancnik and Andraz Kovacic.

At this World Cup he has overseen Brazil v Morocco 1-1 and Jordan v Algeria 1-2 in the group stage.

He also took charge of Mexico v Ecuador 2-0 in the round of 32. In 2022 he refereed two matches, including Argentina’s opening 1-2 defeat to Saudi Arabia.
