Slegers backed by Arsenal hierarchy ahead of huge Man City Women test

Renée Slegers heads into one of Arsenal Women’s biggest games of the season knowing she retains the backing of the club hierarchy despite a difficult recent run.

The Gunners travel to face WSL leaders Manchester City this afternoon, with Arsenal currently seven points behind the defending champions after taking five points from their opening four league matches.

That gap makes today’s 4.30pm clash feel particularly significant so early in the campaign.

Arsenal have won only once in their last five matches in all competitions, with last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea adding to concerns over their lack of goals.

Slegers feels Arsenal backing during difficult run

According to The Guardian, Slegers has felt the full support of Arsenal’s hierarchy during the difficult spell, describing the club leadership as “really good and positive” while also praising the “monumental leadership” being shown within her squad.

That togetherness could prove crucial after Arsenal allowed a two-goal advantage to slip away in Wednesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw with Paris FC.

There have already been warning signs domestically too. We previously highlighted Arsenal’s attacking concerns following the draw with Manchester United, and those issues have not disappeared.

Manchester City provide Arsenal’s biggest test yet

Sunday could hardly provide a tougher opportunity to change the mood.

Manchester City have won all four of their league games this season and sit top of the WSL with a perfect 12 points.

For Arsenal, defeat would increase the gap to ten points after only five matches, while victory would suddenly make the table look considerably healthier.

That makes this about more than simply ending a disappointing run.

It is an opportunity for Slegers and her players to show that the belief she continues to express in this squad can translate into a major result when Arsenal need one most.

Can Arsenal Women produce the response they need against Manchester City today, or has too much ground already been lost in the WSL title race? Let us know in the comments below.
