Liverpool’s narrow defeat at Craven Cottage came with the notable absence of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who remains sidelined due to concussion protocol. While supporters may have hoped to see the Brazilian back in goal, head coach Arne Slot made it clear that player safety continues to come first, even in the midst of a tight Premier League title race.

Slot’s update after the Fulham match emphasised Liverpool’s commitment to medical standards and long-term player wellbeing, rather than risking a rushed return for one of their most crucial players.
After suffering a collision while on international duty with Brazil last month, Alisson has been following concussion guidelines, which ruled him out of the Merseyside derby victory over Everton and now the loss to Fulham.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Slot explained the club’s position:
“Yes, he did [not pass the concussion protocol]. There’s a week to go [until the next match] so that gives us a bit of time. But you know as Liverpool we always follow the protocol in moments like this when it’s a concussion. If you haven’t ticked all the boxes, he can’t be in goal. He wants it a lot but the protocol is the protocol.”
It’s a clear message from Slot and the medical team: no corners will be cut, no matter how eager the player is to return.
Concussion management has become an increasingly important issue across all levels of football, with strict criteria now in place to prevent players from returning prematurely after sustaining a head injury. Liverpool have consistently taken these matters seriously, and Alisson’s case is no different.
In Alisson’s absence, Caoimhín Kelleher has been the man between the sticks. The Irish shot-stopper is well regarded within the club and has proven reliable in big games — most notably in cup competitions — but Alisson’s world-class presence has understandably been missed.
The Reds edged past Everton 2-1 in a closely fought derby, but defensive stability looked more vulnerable during the 1-0 defeat to Fulham. While Kelleher cannot be blamed for the result, Alisson’s command of the box, distribution, and leadership are elements that give Liverpool added confidence and calmness at the back.
With the title race finely poised and key fixtures on the horizon, supporters are understandably eager to see the Brazilian return. However, Slot’s insistence on following protocol serves as a reminder of the bigger picture: health and player longevity over short-term gain.
The good news from Slot’s comments is that there is optimism around Alisson’s return. With a full week to prepare for the next fixture, there is time for the goalkeeper to complete the final stages of the concussion protocol, provided he meets the required criteria.
This typically includes:
The medical staff will assess him daily to ensure that no symptoms resurface, with any setback resulting in additional rest and monitoring. Given Alisson’s importance, there’s no room for risk, especially as Liverpool remain in contention for multiple honours this season.

One of the early indicators of Arne Slot’s management style has been his focus on professionalism, preparation, and protecting his squad. His handling of Alisson’s situation reinforces his belief in long-term thinking and placing player health ahead of results.
Slot’s response reflects well not just on himself but on Liverpool as a club. The unwavering adherence to medical protocols — even for a player of Alisson’s stature — sends a strong message about values, ethics, and modern footballing culture.
With so many clubs around the world still grappling with how to treat concussion and head injuries seriously, Liverpool’s approach stands out. It’s no surprise that Slot ended his comments with clarity and confidence:
“He wants it a lot but the protocol is the protocol.”
While the loss at Fulham is undoubtedly disappointing in the context of the title race, the decision to keep Alisson sidelined is a firm and commendable one. Protecting a player’s long-term wellbeing must always take priority, even when short-term pressures mount.
Like all Liverpool fans we will be hoping the No.1 can return in time for the next clash, but if not, they can at least take pride in supporting a club that puts its people before the points.
