Liverpool manager Arne Slot has joked that Jamie Carragher’s comments on his side’s openness helped shore up their defence against Arsenal.
The champions moved to the top of the Premier League table with a 1-0 win over Arsenal at Anfield. Dominik Szoboszlai scored the only goal of the game on 83 minutes, blasting home a fabulous free-kick from distance.
The Reds also recorded a first clean sheet of the season, having conceded four goals across their opening wins against Bournemouth and Newcastle.
Following the former win, ex-Liverpool defender Carragher was critical of the side’s over-commitment to pushing players forward, after Bournemouth scored on the break.
Assessing the win over Arsenal, Slot said Carragher’s comments led to a change in approach.
“If you win against a team like Arsenal, who last season were such a good team and have strengthened so much, to win against them is very positive. We will know at the end of the season what it’s worth,” the Dutchman said, speaking to Sky Sports.
“Listening to Jamie [Carragher]. He thought we were far too open against Bournemouth so we thought let’s make it a boring game. On a more serious note, they took the risk of going 1v1, this was hard because they brought all the midfielders so close to the defence.
“Then in the second half we went 1v1 but with Szoboszlai playing close and three midfielders. In the second half we pressed really well so for me after 45 minutes we got the upper hand. In the end we needed a moment of magic.”
