Arne Slot is backing Ryan Gravenberch to continue to impress in the number six role for Liverpool.

With the potential arriving of Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi having fallen through earlier in the window, Slot opted to go with Ryan Gravenberch as his deepest midfielder and feels he has done well thus far.

He said: “He brings certain qualities that we like. In the three games he’s played he’s done really well.

“He has a lot to prove, but that is with all of them. It’s not about the individual, it’s about the team.”

The Reds welcome Brentford in the 4:30PM kick-off on Sunday in Slot’s first Premier League game at Anfield and the new boss has high expectations from the Liverpool fans.

He said: “I hope they are twice as loud as Ipswich because they were really loud. That would be a big help for us.”

The former Feyenoord boss also said he has no nerves going into the game.

“If you’ve got nerves then you probably don’t trust your team. I trust what we as staff do during the week, as well as the team.”

Having still not signed a player in the window, the Dutchman has confidence with the players at his disposal.

“I trust the team. I’ve said many times, I inherited a good team. A team of young players who can develop. We just try to work as hard as we can. The players, as they have shown, have earned this trust.

“We are on a good track, but we have to understand that some of them have only been here for three weeks. It’s not only about us, it’s also about the opponent.”

With a number of players arriving late in the summer due participating in the Euros or Copa America, Slot admits he’s still getting used to his players.

“I’m learning everyday about these players and the individuals, also how they co-operate with each other. Sunday was also really important because I saw the ones who didn’t play were able to bring a really good training session. That is really important because we need all of them.”
