Arne Slot has said he understands Andy Robertson’s stance on his Liverpool future and has complimented the defender for his attitude this season.

Robertson’s contract at Liverpool expires in the summer with no news over a potential extension. The vice-captain has been a key part of the club’s success since arriving from Hull City in 2017, but has lost his place in the side to Milos Kerkez this season.

Robertson has started just four Premier League games in 2025-26, and admitted recently that he wants to play football after so long as a regular.

In comments published by the BBC, Robertson said: “I can focus on the last eight and a half years. I think Jurgen Klopp left me out for one game and I was raging. So I’m a player who wants to play.

“I’ve played through injuries. I’ve played when I’m not 100% fit. I’ve played when I’ve only been 50/40/30% fit for this club and my country. I always want to be on the grass and playing and obviously now that’s not happening, so that’s what is different.

“I have a different role here this season which I’m getting enjoyment out of, but at the end of the day, footballers want to play and if anyone is sat happy on the bench, then they don’t belong at any football club.”

Slot admits he understands Robertson’s frustration with his reduced role and praised the player for how he has handled a spell out of the side.

“I have to compliment him. He is very mature and I can understand what he’s saying,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Burnley this weekend.

“Every player should have same feeling about their current position and that’s that he’s not starting every game. I am also happy that he says he finds joy in the position he’s in at and how important he’s been to this club for all these years.

“He did play quite a lot of games but not as much as he would have hoped. But the way he’s been acting and his comments in the media is a big compliment and says a lot about him.”
