The Women’s First Team started their defence of the Serie A Women’s Cup in perfect fashion on Friday evening, earning a 2-0 win away to Como 1907.
Alba Redondo and Remina Chiba got the goals for the Bianconere, who return home from their lakeside visit with a clean sheet and three points.
Starting the season as reigning Serie A Women’s Cup holders, the Bianconere looked to show that from the off and came out with personality. Redondo and Chiba looked to combine inside five minutes to pose a threat, and the Spaniard then came close in a solo effort shortly after.
Redondo tried her luck after being found by Estela Carbonell after the 15-minute mark but sent her attempt off target, and Danielle de Jong was then alert to deny Riola Xhemaili and keep the hosts at bay.
The opener came after 25 minutes, and it was no surprise that Redondo got it. Eva Schatzer delivered well from a corner, Barbara Bonansea was on the end of it, and Redondo was the quickest to react to turn it home.
But the Bianconere weren’t letting up there. Matilde Pavan sought to press on and double the lead but shot over, and Schatzer then found Chiba but she wasn’t able to finish.
At the other end, Cecilia Salvai showed her usual solidity to deny Como, and there was just one goal splitting the sides at the break.
The second almost came immediately after the restart. Another Schatzer corner proved problematic for Como, but Bonansea could only send her effort over.
The hosts kept trying to push forward themselves, but it was the Bianconere who looked most likely to score the game’s second goal, and just before the hour mark it was Bonansea again who came close, but ultimately couldn’t find the net. De Jong’s goal remained protected at the other end, this time thanks to Martina Rosucci shutting down a Valentina Giacinti threat.
Chiba eventually got the Bianconere’s second in the 79th minute. Carbonell set her away, and she made no mistake in doubling the lead.
That didn’t dampen the hosts’ spirit, though, and they kept seeking cause for celebration, but they repeatedly found an incredibly alert De Jong in their way.
And so the competitive domestic season begins with three points for the Bianconere, who now turn their attention to Women’s Champions League qualification with their playoff first-leg against St. Polten to come this Wednesday.
