“So Naive” – Sheffield United Boss on Lack of “Game Management” Against Coventry

Sheffield United suffered a narrow 2-1 home defeat to Championship leaders Coventry City on Wednesday night, despite delivering one of their stronger performances of the season.

The Blades made a purposeful start, immediately asserting themselves with sharp movement and intelligent use of possession. A sweeping switch of play from Andre Brooks opened space for Gustavo Hamer, whose low delivery flashed dangerously across goal before Rushworth reacted sharply to tip it behind. From the resulting pressure, United forced consecutive corners, pinning Coventry deep inside their own half and energising the Bramall Lane crowd.

After the break, Harrison Burrows, fresh from scoring against relegated rivals Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend, finally made the pressure count. He latched onto a sublime reverse pass from former Coventry midfielder Gustavo Hamer and finished confidently to give the Blades a deserved lead. Four minutes later, Brooks was denied by Rushworth as United pushed for a second.

That chance proved pivotal. Coventry responded swiftly, with Haji Wright levelling the contest with a powerful strike that Michael Cooper will feel he should have dealt with.

Just five minutes later, the game turned completely. Jack Rudoni timed his run perfectly to meet an inswinging cross from Ephron Mason-Clark, powering home a header that ultimately sealed the victory for the visitors.

Blades manager Chris Wilder expressed his frustration to SUTV:

“It was a really good performance for large parts but the naivety for the two goals was incredible. We should be up at half-time, the tone and feel of the stadium was really good and we had them on the back foot.

We went toe-to-toe and got ahead but the manner of the goals we conceded was so naive. We were wide open for the first and then we turn our back on the second one.

The game turned on its head. We had to be smart and manage the game and we didn’t do that.”

Wilder added:

“When you play as well as we have played tonight, you have got to win the game and we haven’t. From Frank and Coventry’s point of view, they’ll say they’ve not been great but they’ve ended up winning the game. I wish them all well. I think they’ll obviously go on now to play in the Premier League next year and nights like tonight cement that.”

Sheffield United will need to reset quickly as they travel to face Queens Park Rangers on Saturday afternoon.
