As previously reported, due to Bayern Munich’s injury crisis at centre-back, the German champions were considering the option of signing free agent Sokratis Papastathopoulos. The Greek defender has been without a club since leaving Olympiacos in the summer, despite interest from other European sides.
However, as reported by Sky Germany, a possible deal is looking more likely, with Sokratis waiting for the green light from Die Rekordmeister. Earlier in the summer, a move to Real Betis was deemed imminent, but the 35-year-old had hope that the opportunity of playing for Bayern would come up.
A return to Germany would offer Sokratis the perfect chance to finally win his first Bundesliga title. After a seven-year spell in Germany’s top flight – five of which were spent with Borussia Dortmund – the Greek international was unable to lift the Meisterschale, despite making the Bundesliga team of the year in the 2013/14 campaign.
Regardless, Bayern’s stance remains the same; a move will be made depending on their defensive crisis. With Kim Min-jae the only fit centre-back at the club, Die Rekordmeister are in desperate need of reinforcement.
However, if Matthijs de Ligt and Dayot Upamecano’s absence is not deemed to be long-term, then the record champions will hold off until the January transfer window.
