Sounds Around Football: Djed Spence’s rhythm on and off the pitch

"When life gets noisy I like to listen to music. It takes me into a different realm, a different head space - one where I can relax and focus on different things."

In the glittering world of professional football, it’s often the smallest nuances that decide between victory and defeat. But while fans only see the 90 minutes on the pitch, the real preparation begins at home. In this exclusive collaboration called 'Sounds Around Football' OneFootball and Sonos show that sound is far more than just entertainment - it’s the anchor that grounds professionals like Tottenham and England defender Djed Spence.

Spence's love of music started early with his mum, Aisha, setting the tone during the beginning of her son's dream of becoming a professional. "My mum used to play music in the car when we went to training, so it was definitely her who got me into music first," Spence told OneFootball. With Jamaican parents, it was only natural that the island's astonishing musical heritage would have an influence on Spence and his taste.

Growing up, Djed Spence was surrounded by music. His mum had a big sound system in the house, and every Sunday, as she tidied up, the living room would be filled with loud reggae. The chaos of a busy household mixed with the rhythms of the music became a defining soundtrack of his childhood.

These days, while reggae may have been the flavour of his youth, it’s hip hop that now drives the Spurs man. After training, Spence often heads home, turns on his Sonos speakers, and lets rap and dancehall take over his evenings. When asked about his current favourites, Spence says: "G-Hova, Lil Durk, Vybz Kartel.”  With a Sonos sound system, moving through the house while enjoying the best sound quality is effortless, letting him fully immerse himself in the rap music he loves.

"Music helps set the tone for the day. When things get noisy I just listen to music. I go into another world where I can relax and just focus on different things."

Life as a Premier League footballer comes with its pressures, but for Djed, music offers a refuge. It sets the tone for the day, helping him block out distractions and focus on what’s ahead. In these moments, he can relax, recharge, and step into another world—one defined by rhythm, beats, and lyrics rather than the noise of everyday life. This conscious slowing down not only recharges him mentally but also allows him to return to the pitch with full focus and energy.

Whether it’s the stadium atmosphere or training at home, Sonos delivers the sound that powers your routines. Discover more at Sonos.com/Sonos-for-sports.
