It was a busy weekend for Chelsea fans, with the FA Cup final happening on Saturday. Today has been all about digesting the news of Xabi Alonso’s appointment as manager, and the Athletic’s long read about it has so many interesting details.

Chelsea target two positions for “proven talent” upgrades this summer

It’s noted by them that Chelsea are “targeting at least two starting-calibre signings in this summer’s transfer market,” and that “proven talent is set to be prioritised,” with Alonso set to play a big part in that.

This is further evidence of a change in the club’s strategy, to some degree. The focus on exclusively signing youngsters has been shown to be a flawed strategy, and a pivot has long been necessary.

But let’s not pretend the club hasn’t been trying to sign proven talent already. They just need to do a better job at it. We would imagine a top centre back and a top winger are the most likely positions to be targeted, but there are a number of areas we could do with a new starter.

In other news…

The new Chelsea boss has the title of “manager” rather than head coach, and that feels pretty significant to us given the reasoning for it.

Alonso built his reputation on a back three, but according to sources at Sky, he won’t be wedded to that formation when he’s managing Chelsea.
