Sources make two different claims for reason behind collapse of £30m Chelsea transfer

The last few days look to be good progress for Chelsea in their attempts to move on a lot of the squad members currently cluttering up the training pitches without any hope of playing for the first team.

One of the big names and potential big price tags in that group is Armando Broja. The striker looked to have his move away all wrapped up a few days ago, with all the big sources reporting that a loan deal to Ipswich – with a £30m permanent purchase clause if they stay up this season – was done.

However the last few hours have seen plenty of claims that the whole deal has fallen apart. Jacob Steinberg’s piece in the Guardian says that there are “paperwork issues” which have caused it to collapse.

There’s conflicting information here, however, as Sky’s Darmesh Sheth says that it was an issue with the medical that has caused the problems. That would be tragic but unsurprising, give Broja’s struggles to recovery after a serious knee injury a couple of years ago.

Both sides look forward after sudden collapse

From Ipswich’s perspective, there are already alternatives being looked at according to this piece. That doesn’t bode well for Chelsea, who have to return to a player they had already ticked off the list with far less time now to find a destination.

Everton are mentioned by Steinberg in this piece, and he says that the Toffees could move for Broja if they are able to shift their own unwanted strikers Neal Maupay and Beto.

With so many moves hanging in the balance, seeing one collapse at this stage was the last thing Chelsea’s sporting directors needed as they look to quickly tidy up this squad for the new season and get the main group in shape as quickly as possible.
