Round of 32 action got underway with an exciting fixture in Los Angeles
Stephen Eustaquio scored a 92nd-minute winner as Canada knocked South Africa out of the World Cup in the round of 32. Bafana Bafana put in a valiant defensive performance to keep Canada at bay and extra-time seemed more than likely before the LAFC striker fired past Ronwen Williams from range, deep in injury time. Canada were on top for much of the match and Jesse Marsch appeared less than impressed with the performance as he remonstrated wildly with his players from the technical area.
But, come the full-time whistle, he will be happy enough to have made it into the next round and welcomed Alphonso Davies back into his team after a lengthy injury lay-off. The win is Canada’s first in the knockout rounds of a World Cup, and he will hope it is not the last.
Canada will now face either the Netherlands or Morocco in the round of 16, with that match to be contested on Monday. Catch up with the action from SoFi Stadium as it happened below with Standard Sport’s dedicated match blog, complete with expert insight and analysis.
