South Africa will be out to seal top spot in Group C as they face Rwanda in the final match of World Cup qualifying this evening. Bafana Bafana had looked on course to automatically qualify for the tournament for the first time since 2010, but their win over Lesotho back in March was forfeited as a punishment for fielding an ineligible player in the suspended Teboho Mokoena.

The loss of three points coupled with a frustrating goalless draw against Zimbabwe last time out means South Africa are no longer in control of their own destiny heading into the final round of fixtures. They must beat Rwanda to guarantee a top-two finish and have a chance of winning the group if Benin are beaten by Nigeria.

Rwanda were eliminated from World Cup contention on Friday after losing at home to Benin but will end South Africa’s hopes of automatic qualification if they repeat the scoreline from the reverse meeting back in November 2023.
