Vasco coach Renato Gaúcho’s remarks about the adaptation of Colombian players in Brazil drew broad coverage across South America, with outlets in Colombia, Ecuador and Argentina highlighting his view.

He spoke after the 2-1 defeat to Botafogo at São Januário on Sunday, when asked about Marino Hinestroza’s slow start. Renato pointed to wider adaptation issues for Colombians in Brazil, stressing tactical demands.

Renato said he urges attackers to stay calm in the final third and that he frequently corrects his Colombian players, adding there is little time and improvements will not happen overnight. He described many errors as part of a longer process.

Recalling his time at Grêmio, he said he liked Colombian and Ecuadorian players but only approved signings once they were adapted to Brazilian football, citing major tactical differences that require time.

Vasco have four Colombians in the squad, Andrés Gómez as a regular starter, with Marino Hinestroza, Rojas and Carlos Cuesta among the substitutes.

DSports reported that Renato sparked controversy after the loss, distilling his stance as Colombians making too many mistakes. On social media, Carlos Antonio Velez of WinSportsTV said the truth hurts and supported Renato, adding a pointed remark about decision-making. El Tiempo in Colombia used a stronger line, saying Renato had destroyed Marino Hinestroza.
