South Korea’s top flight, traditionally run on the calendar year, could move to a European-style season with a summer break because of intense heat.

The Guardian reports that a survey carried out last week found 70% of the 29 K-League head coaches favour a switch to the traditional schedule, starting after summer and finishing in spring.

South Korea’s professional players’ association has urged a transition to protect players from a worsening climate and dangerous heat, and to help maintain the league’s leadership in Asia and its global competitiveness.

After 29 rounds of a campaign that began in late February and is due to end in October, FC Seoul currently lead the domestic table.

Japan’s J-League has already decided to mirror Europe’s calendar. If South Korea makes the change, China could follow. MLS also hopes to switch from the 2027-28 season.
