Minjae Kim with South Korea and Alphonso Davies with Canada both played their second group matches at the World Cup during the night on Thursday. Read how the games went here.

Narrow defeat for Minjae and South Korea

Minjae played the full 90 minutes in Zapopan but couldn’t prevent his team slipping to a defeat against co-hosts Mexico. After the 2-1 opening win against Czech Republic, South Korea lost 1-0, with Luis Romo scoring the only goal of the game in the 50th minute.

In the final group fixture against South Africa on Thursday at 3:00 CEST in Monterrey, the Taegeuk Warriors will be aiming to get the points required to progress to the round of 32.

Davies was included in the matchday squad after recovering from a hamstring injury but didn’t feature as Canada claimed a historic victory in their second match. The North Americans thrashed Qatar 6-0 in Vancouver, celebrating their first ever win at a World Cup. Jonathan David scored a hat-trick with Cyle Larin, Nathan Saliba and an own goal from Mohammad Al Mannai also on the scoresheet. Qatar played with nine men for much of the match, though, following two red cards in the 33rd and 51st minute.

With four points from two games, Canada have very good chances of qualifying for the knockout phase. Jesse Marsch’s men meet Switzerland in their last group match on Wednesday at 21:00 CEST.
