South Korean police raid football federation over Hong Myung-bo appointment probe | OneFootball

South Korean police searched the national football federation’s offices on Thursday as part of an investigation into the 2024 appointment of head coach Hong Myung-bo, whose side exited the 2026 World Cup at the group stage.

The probe centres on potential obstruction of the regular appointment process, the police have said.

The Korea Football Association declined to comment.

Hong, 57, ended his second spell in charge in late June by resigning after another World Cup failure, following the 2014 campaign. In late July he appeared before a parliamentary committee and said he took full responsibility for the elimination.

After a 2-1 opening win over the Czech Republic, South Korea lost 1-0 to Mexico and 1-0 to South Africa, leaving three points, insufficient for the last 32. President Lee Jae-myung later blamed the failure on incompetent figures promoted to leadership, alluding to sectarianism in top-level recruitment.
